O’Hara’s knot energies are a class of knot energies that penalize self-intersection and, to some extent, reward untangledness. I will explain the basic construction of these energies, their main properties, and explain how minimizers (and more general critical knots) share some decisive features with harmonic maps into spheres, which can be used to show regularity properties for such knots.
